LA NATION

Tuvalu est un petit archipel, une nation indépendante composée de 9 îles,située au Nord de Fidji et à l’est de l’Australie. Elle est membre du Commonwealth et siège bien sûr aux Nations Unies.
Les îles ont une superficie totale de 26 km2. C’est minuscule mais elles s’étendent sur 700.000 km2 d’ Océan Pacifique. Le mode de vie y est très très sobre.
Au dernier recensement, 11.000 personnes ont été enregistrées, en majorité des Polynésiens.

Tuvalu is a small island country, an independant country. it’s made up of 9 islands.
Geographically is north of fiji, east of australia it is a member of the commonwealth and of course it is a member of the United nations. the islands make up a total of 26 km2 and that’s a very small size but of course the islands spread over a large area of ocean in the pacific, totalling something like 700000 km2
Very very subsistant type of living there
The population is, the last census, it was recorded at 11000 people , predomentaly polynesians.

VOIX OFF VF : Nation indépendante depuis 1978, après deux siècle de colonisation britannique, Tuvalu a un pied ancré dans la vie contemporaine…Là où l’autre pied est posé est plus difficile à saisir… Le pays reste fermement attaché à ses traditions millénaires et, avec un revenu national brut de 11 millions de Dollars par an, il y a peu de place pour le luxe. Un tourisme inexistant, pas de télé, pas de pub… Personne n’essaie de vous vendre ce dont vous n’avez pas besoin. Un mode de vie unique, simple, axé sur la famille et la communauté.

NARRATION : Independent from Britain since 1978 after 2 centuries as a protectorate and colony, in many ways life in Tuvalu is familiar, one foot firmly in the contemporary.
Just where the other foot is is harder to pinpoint. Inhabited for thousands of years before the British arrived, this history and tradition too are present.
With a yearly Gross National Product of only about 11 million US dollars, there is little room for luxury. With virtually no tourism and no broadcast or satellite television, there is nothing of the “hard sell” culture here…. no one trying to sell you things you don’t need…or anything else …A unique society… oriented around family and community

Funafuti (le deuxième atoll, par la taille, de l’archipel) est le bord d’un volcan éteint, un long ruban de terre. D’un coté, un lagon protégé, et de l’autre, l’immensité du Pacifique.
Largeur maximale : 500 metres. Elévation au plus haut : 4m au-dessus du niveau de la mer, mais c’est plus souvent 1 mètre 50… et parfois moins

Funafuti (the 2nd largest of Tuvalu’s 9 atolls) is part of the rim of a long extinct volcano, a long, thin ribbon of land – with a protected lagoon on one side and on the other, the vastness of the Pacific.
Maximum width: 1500 feet
Highest point : 13 feet above sea level, but most is only 5...or less.

Tuvalu, en 1998, a été reconnue « nation la plus respectueuse des droits de l’homme ». Selon les critères de l’ONU, avec son revenu annuel de 1000 Dollars par habitant, c’est aussi un pays pauvre. Pourtant, peut être parce que tout le monde est dans le même bateau, ça ne se ressent pas.

In 1998, Tuvalu was recognized as the nation most respectful of human rights. With annual per capita income of only about 1000 US dollars, it is poor….and yet…perhaps because most everyone in the community is in the same boat, it doesn’t FEEL that way…

Malheureusement, nous n’avons aucune ressource à exporter. Quand vous vous baladez, vous ne voyez pas d’usines, juste des gens qui sourient, qui vous offrent l’hospitalité… De quoi ils vivent est une question que beaucoup se posent. La seule chose dont nous sommes fiers c’est notre difference, nous sommes uniques !

Unfortunately, we dont have ressources that we export.. I dont know for how long you have been here now, if you walk around, there’s no factories, you can just see people looking around, just laughing, smiling, giving you the usual hospitality of the island and how they live is a question that is being drummed and asked by so many
The only other thing that we are so proud of is our uniqueness

Au delà de cette apparente sérénité, de stress niveau zéro, le danger qui pèse sur Tuvalu est présent dans tous les esprits.

Beyond the appearance of a serene and impossibly low stress existence, the threat to Tuvalu’s future is clearly a question everyone has been forced to give much thought to….
